Example: axes and masters

Where to begin. A simple example won’t give you much of an idea of how complex you can make things. On the other hand, a complex example might scare you off. Let’s have a look at one of the examples included with the application.

The system in the example has 3 axes or dimensions. The first axis controls the thicks in the letter, making them thicker or thinner. The second axis controls the thins, also making them thicker along the axis. The last axis interpolates between the two different flavor of contrast: one typical for a broad-nib pen, and one typical for the flexible steel nib, or pointed pen.

The masters are placed at these locations:

flavor thicks thins name
0 0 0 Broad Normal
0 0 1 Broad Low Contrast
0 1 0 Broad Black High Contrast
0 1 1 Broad Black Low Contrast
1 0 0 Pointed Normal
1 0 1 Pointed Low Contrast
1 1 0 Pointed Black High Contrast
1 1 1 Pointed Black Low Contrast

The masters stake out the designspace. The next step is to pick define some instances, page 2 .

The animation shows Superpolator travelling along the 3 axes. Type spotters will recognise the cube and the e from Gerrit Noordzij's The Stroke: theory of writing. [Hyphen Press]
